ABOUT SELF-HELP LINKS: WHAT ARE UNBUNDLED LEGAL SERVICES? We are making available to you the following links (see Self-Help Links below) that may help you to handle some legal matters on your own and may help our law firm to represent you better. Why would we do this? There are two reasons: 1. Many people cannot afford an attorney at all, while everyone else simply would like to save money on legal fees. It is our goal to help our clients get as much for their money as possible when they need legal services. 2. The Colorado Supreme Court allows attorneys to provide “unbundled” legal services. This means that as your attorney, we can partially represent you in a legal matter and not have to become your attorney for the whole case. This saves you money. Most attorneys do not offer unbundled legal services but Shaun Pearman has been doing this for years. We want to be your attorneys - but only when you need an attorney. When you do not need an attorney, you can handle the matter on your own. But, be cautioned: Sometimes not consulting an attorney is penny-wise and pound foolish. You may save a little but could end up losing a lot if you miss something important. For example, if you have a problem with your knee, you could actually operate on it yourself. But, you would be better off going to an experienced knee surgeon to have him do the work. Many legal issues are no different. If you are going to proceed without an attorney, we strongly recommend that you still use our firm to look over the paperwork you draft and discuss the matter before you proceed. We provide unbundled legal services at our normal hourly rates. Here are a few examples of legal areas fraught with potential, common, and significant legal pitfalls: 1. Family Law: Child support calculations, parenting time (visitation) disputes, allocation of parental responsibility and decision making (custody), and pension and property division. If done incorrectly, you may end up back in court or may cheat yourself out of money and property, or lose time with your children. 2. Estate Planning: Wills and trusts. If done incorrectly, your estate may not pass to the people to whom you want. There are many “terms of art” or legal terms which have specific legal definitions. If you use one of these terms incorrectly, this may have significant legal consequences. 3. Contracts. If done incorrectly, you may lose money or end up in court. A well drafted contract keeps you out of court. 4. Evictions. If done incorrectly, the landlord or tenant may be liable unexpectedly to the other party. 5. Corporations and LLC’s: If created or operated incorrectly, you may have unexpected personal liability. If the entity is sued, attorneys always look at the corporate books to find out if the entity was operated improperly. If so, the individual owners, officers and directors are added as parties to the lawsuit. If you plan to proceed without an attorney, please call for an appointment or a discussion over the telephone about the matter after you have completed the paperwork you plan on using. We are pleased to provide unbundled legal services. |
